Surgical experience in transposition of great arteries with intact ventricular septum in patients over 21 days of life without left ventricular retraining
Objective: To describe the cases of surgical management in patients over 21 days of life without left ventricular retraining.
Methods: Descriptive study. A review of the clinical history of patients with TGA, with intact ventricular septum between January 2001 and November 2008.
Results: Thirteen patients with TGA with intact ventricular septum. Seven patients (53.8%) were over 21 days of life, of these patients, 5 (71.4%) were male, the medium weight was 3.3 (2.3-4.5) Kg. Table 1 shows patient characteristics. The rate of complications like haemorrhage, low cardiac output and mediastinitis was 14.2%. Death cases did not occur after 30 days of surgery.
Conclusions: The Jatene procedure shows the best results in patients with transposition of great arteries with intact ventricular septum and it is an alternative treatment for patients over 21 days of life without ventricular retraining.
